The Spectacular Spider-Man magazine launched in 1968, after Marvel decided that Spider-Man was popular enough to warrant another title on newsstands. The book was also an attempt at entering the black and white comic book format, popularised by Warren Publishing's books such as Creepy and Eerie, although only the first issue of Spectacular was printed in black and white. Issues of Spectacular were double the length of a standard issue of ASM, and cost more at 35c each. Just two issues of the magazine ended up being published, with a third story, titled, "The Mystery of the TV Terror" never seeing the light of day, although elements of the TV Terror's costume were re-used for the design of the Prowler, who debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man #78, and the name The Spectacular Spider-Man was later revived in 1976 for a new ongoing monthly book.
